Validity

The JR EAST PASS is valid for travel on all of the 72 railway lines of JR EAST:
  • limited express trains (except private compartments or berths), including Shinkansen super express trains;
  • express trains (except berths, etc.);
  • local trains (except "Liner"/"Home Liner").
(for trains referred to in parentheses above, passenger must pay the respective additional charges in addition to the limited express or ordinary express charge. In this case, the PASS is valid for the basic fare only.)

Some JR EAST trains also travel on other companies' lines. Passengers using such trains traveling on non-JR EAST lines must pay the respective fares and charges applicable to the distances traveled on such lines. Please note the names of the following JR EAST-line trains that travel on non-JR EAST lines: "Super-Hakucho, Hakucho", "Hakutaka", "Raicho, Hokuetsu", "Shinano", "Odoriko, Super-View Odoriko", "Kinugawa" and "Nikko".

The JR EAST PASS is not valid for the Tokaido Shinkansen and the Sanyo Shinkansen lines, which connect Tokyo and western Japan cities, such as Kyoto, Osaka, or Fukuoka, and which start from Tokyo station like JR EAST's five Shinkansen lines. The Tokaido Shinkansen and Sanyo Shinkansen lines are run respectively by JR CENTRAL and JR WEST. (Between Tokyo and Atami, use "Odoriko", "Super-view Odoriko", or local trains.)

Validity Period

5-Day Pass, 10-Day Pass
5-and 10-day PASSES are valid for a period of 5 or 10 consecutive days, respectively, beginning on the first day of use of the PASS.

Flexible 4-Day Pass
Usable on any 4 consecutive or non-consecutive days within a month: Useful for leisurely-stay-type travel
Flexible 4-day PASSES are valid for 4 consecutive or non-consecutive days within one month from the date the PASS was issued. (Each date on which the PASS is used will be stamped on the PASS at the respective station's ticket gate or aboard trains.)

Other Conditions of Use

  • The JR EAST PASS may only be used by the person whose name appears on the face of the PASS. Passenger must carry his/her passport at all times during the trip and be prepared to present it when requested.
  • The starting date of validity of the JR EAST PASS cannot be changed.
  • Exchange Voucher and PASS cannot be reissued if it is lost or stolen.
  • The PASS cannot be refunded or extended due to interruptions in train service, late departures or any other reasons.
  • These and other usage conditions are based on the JR EAST passenger transportation regulations and Japanese laws. The validity of the Exchange Voucher before passenger exchanges it for the JR EAST PASS is based on the regulations of the company that issues the Voucher.
  • Any violation of these conditions of use and regulations will render the PASS void and the PASS will be confiscated. In the event of such violation a fine of three times the fares and changes for all sections traveled shell be collected.
  • The contents of this pamphlet are subject to change without notice. JR EAST will not make a refund or compensation in the event of such change.
  • Making Seat Reservations

    The seat can be reserved without extra charge. Visit a JR EAST Travel Service Center (View Plaza) or JR Ticket Office (Midori-no-madoguchi) in advance and present the PASS.

    If passenger boards a train without a reserved-seat ticket, or if the reserved-seating area of the train is full, the passenger will have to travel in the non-reserved-seating area. If this happens, the difference in fare between reserved seat and non-reserved seat will not be refunded. When using trains on which the seat reservation is mandatory such as the Tohoku Shinkansen Hayate, Akita Shinkansen Komachi and Narita Express, the passenger will not be permitted to board without seat reservation.

    Refunds Conditions

    Passenger may obtain a refund for the Exchange Voucher at the office or travel agent that issued it within one year from the issue according to the regulation of each sales office. A JR EAST PASS can be refunded at the nearest JR EAST PASS exchange office in Japan only within the validity period and before the first date of use (in case of flexible pass before the first date of use), with a 10% handling fee deducted from the refund. No refund can be made for any reason after the first date of use.
