What is Green Class? |
|
Green Class is East Japanese Rail's First class. They have larger seats, more legroom, and more luggage space than Ordinary Cars and sometimes feature a hot towel and/or beverage service. Holders of a Green JR East Pass may use the Green Cars or Ordinary cars, while holders of Ordinary JR East Passes may only use the ordinary cars.

Are Trains Safe? |
|
Unquestionably, yes. East Japan Railway Safety is a proud tradition going back to the earliest days of rail travel. Incidents involving passenger death or injury are very, very rare indeed. Also, the risk of injury through terrorism in Japan is incredibly small, however to ensure maximum security, railway staff are on their guard at all times for suspicious activity.

Do I need to make a seat reservation? |
|
The answer depends on the train you are taking. Not all trains require a seat reservation, however, if you board a train without a reserved seat, or if the reserved seating area of the train is full, you will have to travel in the non-reserved seating area.
When using trains that provide only reserved seating, such as the Tohoku Shinkansen Hayata, Akita Shinkansen Komachi and Narita Express, you will not be permitted to board without a seat reservation.
You can book a reserved seat without extra charge. Visit a JR East Travel Service Center or JR Ticket Office in advance and present your pass.
