Nagano is a treasure house of nature, history and culture. Situated in the center of Japan, the site of the Olympic Winter Games 1998, Nagano evolved as temple town around Zenko-ji, Nagano's most renowned sight, and one of Japan's most important temples. It is also home to the Northern, Central and Southern Alps, and so is often referred to as the "Roof of Japan." Its 13,585 square kilometers play host to four national parks that offer year round recreational activities, from hiking and camping in spring, summer and autumn, to skiing and skating in winter.
