MIYAGI

300km north east of Tokyo, Miyagi is located in central Tōhoku. It faces the Pacific Ocean, and contains Tōhoku's largest city, Sendai. Nicknamed "The City of Trees", this beautiful area is filled with interesting attractions that would entice any tourist.

The Sendai City Museum displays a number of artifacts related to the history of Sendai, including suits of armor as well as relics related to the famous ambassador/samurai Hasekura Tsunenaga.

Just north of Sendai Station is the Toshogu Shrine, built in 1654 by Tadamune Date. It is one of many Toshogu Shrines built across Japan to honor the Shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa, but this one in Sendai is considered to be one of the more beautiful with elaborate carvings of fantastic creatures and fine details such as lacquer, gold leaf and cloisonné. Many of its structures are designated Important National Cultural Properties.
Nearest Station: Toshogu Station (Senzan Line).

Another interesting site is the ruins of Sednai Castle (also known as Aoba Castle). Originally the home of Date Masamune and his family, it was damaged in World War II. Luckily, sections of the castle remained intact and restorations are now taking place. From the castle ruins, visitors can enjoy a great panoramic view of the city!
Nearest Station: Sendai Station (Tohoku Shinkansen)

Don't Miss:

Matsushima - The unforgettable sight of over 260 islands in Matsushima Bay is one of the three most scenic locations in Japan.
