Iwate faces the Pacific Ocean to the east, and borders Aomori, Akita and Miyagi. The area is known for its beautifully rugged landscape characterized by a number of mountains and valleys. Iwate's variety of sightseeing spots and historical sites reflects the Iwate's history and tradition.
Morioka, the capital of the Iwate Prefecture, is the home to a number of interesting attractions, notably Ho Onji temple. This ancient sanctuary, beautiful in its own right, is the home to the "Statues of the 500 Disciples of Budha". Created by Kyoto sculptors, these wooden, lacquered statues are truly a sight to behold. Also, included within the display are statues of Marco Polo and Kublai Khan! The temple is still active to this day and is used for a number of Buddhist ceremonies.

Morioka is also home to the incredible "Rock Splitting Cherry Tree", located in front of Morioka Court of Justice. This 400 year old wonder of nature sprouted from within the crack of a giant boulder, splitting the rock as it grew! Designated a National Treasure as of 1923, the Rock Splitting Cherry Tree continues to inspire all who lay eyes on it!
