Located on the southern end of the international waters of the Tsugaru Straits, Aomori is a bustling, modern city. It is enclosed on one side by the Hakkoda mountain range and on the other by the sea and a natural harbor. Aomori enjoys mild weather throughout the year regardless of season. In winter the average temperature is approximately 2.C and only rarely does it fall as low as -10.C.

Aomori is also the home of the Sannai-Maruyama Site. Located in the South West of Aomori city center, it is Japan's largest area of excavated 5,000 Jomon-era ruins.

The Nebuta festival is one of Japan's largest, most exciting festivals, usually taking place during the first week of August. It features a parade made from traditional Japanese paper and hundreds of light bulbs. These magnificent floats are accompanied by traditional Nebuta musicians and dancers. The festival is typically closed by an enormous fireworks display that is sure to please any crowd.
